Stabat Mater — The Mother Remains
By Lauree Laing
For all of recorded history, he has marched off to war
For all of unrecorded history, she has awaited his return
"My son was just nineteen when he killed another man, another boy…a
boy whose mother waited for him to return home that night, too."
~Crystal
Three waiting women, three epic ages, one unimaginable purgatory:
awaiting the return of a child gone off to war. Critically-acclaimed
playwright Lauree Laing weaves insight, humour and depth into this
one-act play. She masterfully tells a story of opposing forces--
love and hate, peace and anger.
Herself a mother of a Canadian soldier, Laing gives us a glimpse
into the tormented souls of the families left behind. She allows
us to journey through the anguished minds and hearts of the hopeful
mothers who remain.
Lauree, a member of Dragonfly Media Publishing, is a winner
in the 2006 Stepping Stones playwriting competition for her piece
"Fontaine of Youth" produced and presented in Ajax, Ontario in the
spring of 2006.
